TIMELESS SORROW

‘Tis midnight on the hallowed shore
Of sands swept to the ocean floor.
Beneath a thick and foggy mist
Of darkest death Sweet Night hath kissed.
Amidst the shadow of a spire,
That once burned of brilliance and fire.
But dimmed and void of all light shone,
Now would guard none from Hymen's groan.

A wail of anguish through each night
Of misappropriated plight,
Searching an endless tomorrow,
Cries the ghost of Timeless Sorrow.
A man who held his lifelong dream
In a lover's eyes, once agleam.
But by temptation fell to shame,
Giving his lust before his name.

There, by the glint gone from her eye,
By a sad and silent goodbye,
He cast his life unto the sea
Upon a ship named Misery.
That once again true love might smile
In purest white along that aisle.
Eyes set upon a brighter face,
Than his, who by love, brought disgrace.

Only in hopes would come a day
Her memory might slip away.
But stormy skies held him steadfast
Anchored, somehow, to dismayed past.
Every wind upon the ocean
Breathing fire from her emotion.
Every wave, a crashing token
Of the promise he had broken.

Every spatter of fallen rain
An ikon of tears spent in vain.
Every glimpse of lightning torn skies,
Quickening to the heart and the eyes.
As if, like love, a blinding tease
That only leads to darker seas.
As if by passion, lured on,
By her very essence, hope drawn.

And so from seasons regretting,
From years spent, never forgetting,
By calmer skies, by gentler foam,
The Misery guided him home.
Per chance to look upon her eyes.
To see her love, see her surprise.
By the slim chance she might forgive,
That, somehow, again he might live.

Wherein by landfall come to sight
Beneath glimmering lighthouse light,
A marble cross facing the sea
That called to him of sheer beauty.
But closer inspection thereof
Brought words to wrench his heart of love.
"Forever longing, here lies she
Who lost her love to Misery."

Awakened to his sin of pride
Upon her grave there, too, he died.
The lighthouse above, falling dark,
As if, somehow, his grave to mark.
For the raging tides of the sea
Carried him back to Misery,
To search eternally the morrow
For her soul in Timeless Sorrow.

Mike, once again you've struck me speechless. For struck me this did indeed. It nailed me to my chair, with my jaw a-hang. The depth of pain and sorrow in this tale bereaves me as it does the subject. In may ways I identify, but at the end, I was this man.

Wow. This is it Mike. I bow to you in respect.

WOW!! Michael, this has left me speechless.
It is beautiful!

Yes, I am here, but I am dead, not alive,
my body goes on, my spirit has died
and I though alive, feel dead inside.

Stupendous, most amazing piece of work... the profoundity of this is remarkable, but then I should expect nothing less than perfect coming from you Michael....

WOW, it might take me a lifetime to write something even sparingly near to this in quality... and you do it so effortlessly...

I am delighted to have read this one.

My friend, this is so far superior to my poems, I'd gladly give up any space I may have garnered in the book to allow ONE more of yours. Magnificent.

Thanks guys - this one will always have a sentimental value to me I think...

Especially glad you liked it so much, Chris.  In many ways I know you've "been there".

And PdV, as you inspired this piece via one fantastic challenge, your compliment means the world to me.  TY

Wow.  And wow.  This read like an epic -- for some reason it brought "The Highwayman" to mind ...

You are the consummate storyteller when you put your mind to it, Michael ... the most perfect rhyme and meter could not hope to match the emotion you have woven into this one.  You won't find me bowing, mind you, but you have my respect nonetheless ...

Love you

Michael,

I have seen both sides of your work and I must say that there is no side that you don't express with absolute perfection. I don't know how you do it, but please, keep 'em coming

I am glad to see you floating about the halls again, and wanted to refresh my reading of your work.  I am thrilled I started with this one.  I wish we could bump things into 2004, or request a re-post from you on occasion of your great work.  I think I read it all on the main site now, so here I am in the archives Thank you for this treat.
