Winner Takes It All

Castles stand in checkered fields
And there white knights abound
Guarding queen and sacred king
Here too are bishops found

A simple pawn, in this life’s game
My every motion’s checked
My path is blocked, there’s no escape
The victory’s hopes now wrecked

In silent moves the kingdom falls
As one by one they’re lost
The winner takes it all tonight
No matter what the cost

It’s check, it’s mate, it’s do or die
There is no turning back
The night falls soft in shades of gray
But here, it’s white or black

What lies behind us and lies before us are small matters compaired to what lies within us.

Oh this is superb, Ruth. We are but pawns, sometimes it seems. I really enjoyed your unique perspective in this rather dark piece. I could actually envision a huge chess board, with all the men "us"! (Well, in a matter of speaking, that is!)  A lovely composition, this.

A winning gambit here!  But it's not that bad to be mated...? eh?

Awesome, Ruth. I've missed your writings SO much.

I used to play chess but stopped because I was always getting rooked
