The Hope Chest

An old hope chest,
Now covered with dust,
Laced with cob webs.
Fancy latches,
Now tainted with rust
Sits appropriately alone,
In a dark lonely corner,
The attic now its home.
Daring to open the lid,
I am carried back in time.
Back to the days of I love yous,
When he was mine.
I remove each treasure.
All his letters I read.
Then with tear filled eyes,
I see what lies beneath.
Folded delicately is the wedding gown.
Once a dazzling pure white.
The dress of my dreams now faded,
Like the promises of a future bright.
This article of celebration,
Was never worn,
This bride to be,
It never adorned.
Sadly I close the lid,
On this once " hope chest ",
Hoping tomorrow may be the day,
These memories are finally laid to rest.

Oh Jul, I can feel that memory and the sadness. I have a chest too, not officially a hope chest, but it has a lot of old momentos of loves past. I get very emotional whenever I get into it. This was just lovely.

Words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think.

Memories can often be hard to go to but when we do take that time to reflect it seems sometimes that the most powerful ones end up being the worst ones.  You have to search for the good ones and when you find them you get sadder yet knowing what once was.  Vicious circle.  You have penned a beauty and it was lovely to read this morning.

Juliet,
Memories seem to be what we want to relive sometimes...
Nicely written.

So true BloomingRose. Some of them are better just left hidden away. Thanks for the kind words.

Hope chests come in many shapes and sizes
I think we all have a place to keep old dreams ... my grandmother used to have a walk in attic ... I can remember searching through its' treasures as a child and listening to the greatest stories, she would gladly share with all the grandchildren
You've managed to stir this loving memory to me with your poem
Thankyou

Very well done... I love the irony of the "hope chest" and the complete "hopelessness" in this one.
