What Lies Beneath

Lined in velvet pouched in gold
Are memories captured
For eyes to behold.
Boxed and ribbon-banded tight
Written words, a young man's plight.

From over seas, thoughts travel, pause
Wars are fought
A "strangers" cause.
But when in hand, a comfort brings
My eyes, they hold, your words, they sing.

Censored his, in places blacked
Wondering I,
What often lacked.
A missing love, these jumbled thoughts
On wings of planes, the mail has brought.

My heart remembered, last few nights
A young girls war
She had to fight.
Knowing then, what may not be
These written words, to her from he.

The war raged on, and news was read
Dying, dreading,
Images led
To sometimes hearing, what should not
Mistakes were made, no deaths forgot.

Each hearing sent, the order mixed
Her mind sent soaring
In betwixt.
Were these of loving, missing her
Newest of the thoughts that stir?

Or were they first and last received?
Were "Dear John's" messages
To be believed?
The time was lonely, tunes were cried
Dusty Springfield's songs, I sighed

"You don't Have To Say You Love Me
Just Be Close At Hand"
I breathed..
And sent to you return of love
Awaiting more, your thoughts to read.

So in this box, the one that holds
Attention, mine
Pouched in gold
A dusting of,  my memories few
Of loving thoughts, so timely, too.

For in my life, of sadness now
I grasp, inhale,
Hold on somehow
Needing just a touch of "real"
Some nights and days, I need to "feel".

Martie..thank you..I meant it to make others "feel"...E. had asked me in my poem As Promised what I had in my  treasured box lined in velvet, pouched in gold....and  the answer...memories...letters ribbon-banded from times past...

Mark...you grace me with your words...maybe more than I deserve...but I will eat them up like my favorite caramel chocolates...one at a time and savor the aftertaste  just for a bit longer...
