(Just a brief note on this one...it was written for a good friend online who goes by the name of sleeping_dragon. The woman whom he was living with and very much in love with a few years back was attacked and raped in their home. He caught her attacker and nearly killed the man. Because of all this, their relationship disolved a short while later. Since that time, because of his fear of his protectiveness and the depth of his passion, he has been unable to let himself love another. The name sleeping_dragon symbolizes his passions buried...this is for him)

The Dragon Sleeps

In the quiet darkness,
The dragon sleeps tonight.
Within his chambers, damp and cold,
Emits the faintest light.

His eyes are closed and seeing her
In his dreams tonight.
His claws, so long, they are unsheathed,
Sharpened and shinning bright.

Heated breath escapes his mouth
As wings extend in sleep;
Wishing to enfold her tight
Safe within his keep.

The fires of his passion
Are burning like a flame;
And since the day he met her
He’s never been the same.

His talons reach out in his sleep
To touch upon her hair;
As in his dreams, he’s there with her,
Deep within his lair.

Hush don’t wake the dragon
Here on his leafy bed
Where visions of a maiden fair
Dance inside his head.

He’ll rage once more at daybreak
As dreams dissolve with light;
But for now, in peace he rests;
The dragon sleeps tonight.

 Have you ever noticed
That the words...
"Goodbye"
"I'm sorry"
"I love you"
Are so easy to pronounce
...Yet so hard to say

Ruth you amaze me with your talent and tender heart! This has to be one tough situation. I think you've done a great job writing about this.  Very touching verse my friend!

Ruth, what an amazing poem!  I have to agree with WhtDove.  This tells the tale of someone tormented, tortured by what cannot be, peaceful only when he dreams of that special someone.  So sad!  Hopefully, the sleeping dragon can find peace in a wakeful state someday.

That is a terribly sad story behind this one. I like this poem. I am partial to dragons though.
Great poem.

I realy don't know how you do it, but you sure do. Excellent Ruth
