I am just a cowboy,
...I ride the lonesome trail,
Tonight I'll lay my bedroll down,
...beyond the distant swale.

Was on the drive with Chisholm,
...saw Hardin in his prime,
I'll be leavin' with my boots on,
...come final roundup time.

Earp was just a card shark,
...Holliday a drunk,
Wild Bill, he took one in the back,
...in Deadwood, who'd have thunk.

No notches on my six-gun,
...that's just a tin-horn trick,
I've read the "Book" o'er dead men,
...but killin' makes me sick.

I've rode with wild vaqueros,
...rode drag and eaten dust,
Seen Hickock's jail in Abilene,
...seen gold towns go to bust.

I've travelled from Durango,
...across the Kansas plains,
Been trapped in an arryo,
...by sudden mountain rains.

Ain't got no use for city life,
...can't stand the gol' durn din,
I've lived my life as I've seen fit,
...a cowboy always been.

My buckskin mare is my best friend,
...atop her I now climb,
As I ride the lonesome trail,
...for this, the final time.

As coyotes howl, I head due west,
...for roundup now is done,
Adios, this cowboy rides,
...into the setting sun.

Mike, I love it. The western homespun style, the rough and tumble references, the wizened, hard, mostly thankless, always fulfilling life of a true cowboy's ride is woven into this piece, and so skillfully. Just superb!
