I don't profess to be a professional at this, but with nearly 60 poems in print now in numerous journals and anthologies, I do believe I can offer some help to anyone serious about starting out in the mad world of publishing. I do have a few simple do's and don'ts that I'll require of anyone asking for my help. They are as follows:

DO...
Purchase a good book of poetry publishers such as Poet's Market or Writer's Market

Expect to put a good deal of time and effort into getting your poems out there

Expect rejections...and lots of them

E-mail me or post questions here

Expect suggestions of publishers who are willing to take a chance on new poets

Expect some good suggestions and advice

Don't...
E-mail me your poems and expect me to rewrite them for you

Expect an immediate reply from me as I have a full time job and a life outside of here

Expect miracles, it takes time and effort to succeed in publishing

Expect to have a book accepted without first having some poems published in journals

Expect to get rich...most publishers pay in the way of contributer's copies (sorry

Waste my time if you're not serious

~ Ruth

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

Thank you, Ruth... Most of you don't know that we had a "Publishing Tips" forum at one time.  Ruth was our Senior Moderator for that forum, and has a great deal of information to share... If you're serious about getting published... Consult her with your questions...

What a wonderful offer! If I get any more serious (hard for me to do) I will definitely read and listen to those who have already walked that pathway. I don't need to learn everything from scratch. THANKS!

I've had a few poems published in different poetry books, but I've never taken that step in writing my own book.

I guess it takes courage...and I'll have to get it soon....I have about 150 to put in a book format...and half a book.

(smiles) Oh Ruth, getting published is a dream to me, and I know there's not many miracles and serendipity in it at all, but I would love to give it a try too! (hugs) Let me know more details and I would love to get back to you, yay!!!

I don't know if I'm quite good enough to be published in journals of any sort... I'll have to buy a few and read, to get some idea what how high the quality bar is.  Then, I'd love to try and be published... that kind of recognition is what I've always dreamed of.

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind... also, thanks for being here to help... I'll come to you with any questions I might have.

I've tried dumber things for no better reason than that I was bored at the time.

So...e mail is on its way Ruth!

Thanks again.

Ruth, you know me I will just be happy to get even one into this little book of ours   but you - well you deserve to be on the shelves, all over the place and not have to work that hard at getting there either.  I will NEVER forget you looking out into the ocean that day on the way to Martha's Vineyard and what came out of that look was the most incredible poem of yours I think I had heard before, but then it was the only time I heard them too. I'm just kidding, you are a wonderful, caring, and loving, but a no-nonsense person, and I know you would go to any length to help the poets here.

Local Parasite...as a big fan of your work, I have no doubt at all that if you seriously put some effort into getting your stuff out to the publishers, it will get published

Noah...you can do it too!

Congratulations to you on your success.

I would love to write as a career.

I realize that it takes patience, perseverance and effort.

I often ask myself why it is important...
My answer is always the same-
To do what you love, love what you do and share what you can with the world...

If you have some time to read me...
I would appreciate your comments. I have been published in several collectives...no journals yet.  That is my next goal.

Thank you.

This Diamond...sure, e-mail me a few when you get a chance and I'll look over them, just be patient with my reply. Perhaps I can give you a few suggestions on some journals who are willing to accept new poets.

Paul...please do

Bill...first, get yourself one of the publishing books...Poet's Market (my favorite), Writer's Market, ect
I can point out some of the nicer publishers to work with and the ones willing to give new poets a chance

hoot_owl_rn - Thanks for the reply, I'll pick one up as soon as I can. Being I'm out in the mountains, I'll have to wait until I get to town though...
