Here I am again. sigh.

We just got word from our Parish president that the area that I live in, suffered serious levee damage last week during Isadore. They announced that there are plans to divert the inevitable tidal surge into some of the retaining ponds/canals designed for just that purpose. Um...guess what's in my back yard? Yep...that lovely little pond in the park behind my house may soon become a not so lovely lake. So we basically received flood instructions.
NOT GOOD NEWS. I have been watching the city build a make-shift levee for about two days. Located about 75 yards from my back door. I'll check in when I can, but ask for prayers that the tides be merciful. And of course, please pray for all who may take a direct hit from this pitbull of a storm.

Love to all...I'm off to take a good look at the attic--nervous grin.

And YES...we ARE gathering receipts, and videotaping our belongings for insurance purposes.
I somehow have this visual of me swimming with my pc receipts in a baggie, held in my mouth.

sigh.

Read a blurb in the local paper about what the day may bring to New Orleans, so I've already checked in with the powers that be and asked 'em to protect you and yours.  Hopefully, it won't be as bad as they predict.  I'll be thinkin' about ya, K.

There's no place to go...there ain't much "up" around here. But? I know I'm not the only one now. The hubby just got back from a sporting goods store to get more batteries, lanterns, etc.

He told the clerk that I was pretty nervous. She told him not to tell me then that they sold out their entire stock of life-jackets, and rafts, etc. (almost amusing to note that he doesn't listen to ANYONE)

But we're doing what we can. Thanks...and smiling again--this one is just scary.

I must say...this is one helluva gamble...Sharon & Nan--thank you for calling--we ARE missing out on most of the weather thus far. Unfortunately the storm is supposed to hit the coast at 7/8 a.m. Which coincides with high tide. And yes, I will be up all night...you heard the wind? We are now under tornado watch. The only thing we don't have to worry about is an earthquake. (That was a joke, Sharon--smile with me?)

I'll check in as long as I'm able---keep in mind that my area is still not under Hurricane Watch--but Tropical Storm conditions, including the ever present flash flood watch. (and yes, I think I quit trembling, had to--couldn't type.)

Love to you all...

Want some company?  I'll stay up with ya long as I can keep 'em open.  Tuning in the weather channel now and then as I have all day, just to check on the conditions there.  This has caused me to remember the year I moved, sight unseen to the Delaware coast and on my second day there noticed the hurricane instructions on the grocery bags.  I thought, 'Uhoh...bad move'.  LMAO

The winds are just starting to die down a bit. But of course another band is on the way...and this only the milder winds. A tornado was spotted just east of the canal that I'm worried about.  And Jenn? I'd love to chat, but I just pop in and out--I need to keep the phone line open--my mom, my brother, my sister--sigh...EVERYBODY is in the same situation. But it looks better for us at least. Looks like Lili is wobbling back N West--much better for us. But my heart is breaking for the central coast of La. And? here come the winds again...gotta git.

Karen...just popped in to take a look around,
and stumbled across this.
You and your family are most definately in my
thoughts and prayers tonight, as well as all
those in the path of this storm.
Please, whatever you do, stay safe.
As the others have said, 'things', though they may mean
a lot to us, are still just 'things.
YOU and your family, however, are most important.
Sending prayers, and crossing fingers...and toes...
and legs...and eyes...hmmmm...running out of
things to cross, but wishing you all the best.
Love and hugs,
~Vicky

Looking at the radar images is a little unnerving.  To see this giant, red spot headed straight for land, and knowing what could happen.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all, and special thoughts out to special people.

hey...just woke up--and I'm still shaking my head at the small miracle I saw take place as I watched this thing drop so much power so quickly--and take a miraculous toggle to the west. At the time I posted this, We were looking at a category 4 with the potential for horrific damage. While of course, we prefer NO one take the brunt of a direct hit, the way this one entered coastal La. was a blessing--if you look at a map, you will see that folks in my part of the state--southeastern coast-- have no way to evacuate--we are basically pockets of islands connected by low lying highways and bridges. I think I fell out about 6 a.m. after a "feeder band" type squall hit us--and we received Tornado WARNINGS, (not a watch, but actual sightings) sometimes 3 at a time. We are facing several problems with levee breeches. The effects of the storm surge and tides are still not apparent. As I type, the National Guard is evacuating a town called Montegut which is going under--about 4 feet of water--so, I'm watching the news m'self. The news reports water rising in southeast La...still very far away from me, at about a foot an hour. So--we lucked out thus far with wind damage, etc. Now I have to watch the tides. But I have my fingers crossed--at 6 a.m. the levee that most concerns my neighborhood still had 1 foot before topping the levee--as the effects of tidal surge travel inland--we are obviously still holding our breath. We still get some pretty good wind gusts now and then--but nothing like 5 a.m. Scary, scary scary stuff...Thanks to all who stayed up with me--I'll be checking in--looks like more heavy rains are coming in our way.

And thank you all--I'm just exhausted from worry, and anxiety--AND PACING. And even tho the scenario is much better than it was (had it come our way, we would have been facing a 20 ft. storm surge--a wall of water that would have been impossible for our levee system to contain) and truly, even right now, the levees are still questionable in many areas.

And? Here comes the rain again...THANK YOU ALL for prayers and holding my hand.

So...the word is? Minimal damage thus far to Greater New Orleans area--but? It ain't over yet. Later, good poets!

My sister will probably be peeved with me for a while, cause I lost all claim to southern gentility before she finally got her family out of New Iberia. *G* I haven't heard from them today, but they should be safe, staying with cousins... and as long as they're all alive and well, she'll have years to put my interfering self in my place. *S*
Meanwhile, even not knowing what's happening, I'm grateful that area is facing 90 mph winds instead of 145 mph with an almost 20 foot storm surge!!! A Category 1 hit beats a category 4 anytime... *S*

Update to that: *S* They're without electricity, but all okay... getting rain and wind up in Opelousas, but hoping Lili will continue her rapid movement and get on out of there so they can go back home and assess the damage. *S* Property can be replaced... people can't be. *S*

Ruth? I'm glad so glad you convinced them to leave. As grateful as I am for how this storm diminished--it leaves me with a lingering worry that some may not take the NEXT one seriously. Hugs, lady, glad your family is doing well. I've checked in with mine--and some too are without power, but? We are grateful.

There are some who do not know what a category 4 storm can do. As Balladeer said, and La. discovered just last week, even a tropical storm can cause serious damage.

For the curious:

That's as close as I like to get to 'em too.

And Ruth? There's some footage of what Allison did here in New Orleans--lightning hits an oil refinery...some things, we should NEVER forget.

sen: I'll admit I lost my cool... and I'm not a Scorpio for nothing. *G* But I'd rather make up later than attend funerals. *S* And a category 4 with 145 mph winds??? Last night, that tidal surge was several feet higher than New Iberia's highest point of elevation... Abbeville would have been under 8 feet of water... New Iberia wouldn't have fared that much better. So I reminded them that if they wanted to know what it was like to see only the roofs of big trucks and houses, they should have come over here during Allison... swimming through the sewage contaminated water IN YOUR HOUSE just isn't on any recommended agenda! LOL

I'm so glad y'all are okay... I swear New Orleans is a rubber ball the way it bounces back from whatever's thrown its way... but there's still an awful lot of pain and misery during recovery. *S*
