So a lot of people seem to think that the new millenium doesn't start till 2001. I on the other hand think it started the first second after midnight December 31st 1999. What's your expert opinion on this.

Was 2000 the 3rd millenium or still the 2nd.?

Was it the 20th century or the 21st ?

Have a Happy New Year Everybody, and
party like its 1999.

Yep, the stroke of midnight tonight rings in the new century and the new millenium. 2000 was the last year of the 20th century and the 2nd millenium...which is all really pointless since time should really be measured by the Jewish calendar....and I have no idea what year this really is!

Well, look at it this way, Parker ...

When you count to ten, do you start with zero, or one...?

Personally, I start with one -- which, to me, translates into the thousandth year being the last, not the first ...

Well I beg to differ here folks...

First off when you turn 1 year of age... you got to that number by every second, minute, hour and day before the event totalled 1 year.
One second later you are going into your second year of life. Why do we say one year old... past tense... its over folks, beyond it is the time builder for your second year.

Why do we call 19?? the 20th century or the 18?? the 19 century and now the 20?? the twenty first century.  Its because we are now into the next one the first second of the year.

So when we count each number is referring to the end of it not the beginning of it.

So as soon as we hit 2000, we have now have 2000 years of history past.

As for which calendar we use... I don't want to get into that one...

So I'm sticking to what I understand, and that is that we have already had one year of the 3rd millenium...

and there is never enuf said sven!

Hi Parker,

Not that it really makes a great deal of difference in the long run because, after all, all we're really talking about here is just our calendar, not absolute time at all.

But to go back to your argument, if you were born on Jan 1 of the very first year of our current calendar then the absolute second you became one year old would have been on Jan 1 of year 2 and the second you became 10 years old would have been on Jan 1 of year 11. The calendar started with year 1 rather than year zero. You can count it out on your fingers (figuratively of course) and see that the second you became 2000 years old was on Jan 1, 2001. So that is when you actually began your third millenium.

Since you were born on the very first day of the calendar, you are exactly as old as the calendar and thus it also begins its third millenium on Jan 1, 2001. Jan 1, 2000 was also a significant day in that the calendar rolled over all four digits from 1999 to 2000. Those of us who need to get the maximum good from our cars have experienced the "thrill" of watching the odometer roll over from 99,999 to 1000,000 miles. That's always more interesting the the roll over to 100,001. Much the same concept.

Well, that's my $0.02 worth.
