I’ve just finished reading a biography published
in 1970 of Emily Dickinson.  In it the author makes
a good case for, Judge Otis P. Lord, (with whom,
though he was 18 years older, it is accepted she was an
item in the last years of his life), was the person,
original secret love, to whom the Master Letters were
addressed, but more interesting to me is the
position that in at least some of her poems
the “Lord” spoken of or addressed is really Otis.

Doesn’t that somehow tarnish the icon?

Ali stole my reply.

No. Why? Because while to some,
words are dead - meaningless,
unworthy...

to others, they inspire, revive,
relieve, give life to, and
hand over gently, hope.

Still to others, they empower,
vitalize, give credence,
and strength.

What better compliment, without
losing one's self...
to address one, with love,
and steadfastness?

if Emily loved, truly loved the man, then I ask, how do we know for certain who she met, unless, we read her mind, wull, we did of course read her poems, (her mind) but perhaps she meant our God almighty at times, and perhaps at times she meant him...or visa versa, or even none of the above?

My answer...No

NOPE for me too...

and, just as an added note...

had she addressed the man as satan and described him as a red man with horns and big teeth... I would still love her writing...

I love Emily no matter what or whom she wrote about

John, I supsect I'm kind of a pain in the ass to you, but might I ask a question of you in reply:

Do you think it should, and if so, why?

(so it's a two-parter)

SB,

The question arises
if they were no more in fact
than the adolescent addresses of a love lost recluse
to a married man eighteen years her senior,
( and her father’s friend),
then is it she or what we made of her ,( and her words),
despite her,(and their),  reality,
that enthralls and wins our reverence
as well as praise?

I tell you what?

If you'd like me to answer your questions with a personal opinion, you answer mine too, then, okay?

*shrug*

You show me yours, I'll show you mine.

Interesting.

And I really hate talking through type at times, because you can't see my eyes, or the tone of my voice to know that I really am more interested in knowing your opinion, and not into a game of intellectual chess.

My time is limited at the moment, but if you would mind going into detail (and yes, I would love to know if those details are indeed your personal opinion too) I'd be grateful.

I tend to learn more from conversation about subjects by discussing them in friendly fashion, yanno?

I'd appreciate it, John.
