The writer Georges Polti once postulated that there is a sum total of 36, and only 36, dramatic situations upon which all plots are based. They are: (optional reading in this next block of type)

1 Supplication
2 Deliverance
3 Crime Pursued by Vengeance
4 Vengeance Taken for Kindred Upon Kindred
5 Pursuit
6 Disaster
7 Falling Prey to Cruelty or Misfortune
8 Revolt
9 Daring Enterprise
10 Abduction
11 The Enigma
12 Obtaining
13 Enmity of Kinsman
14 Rivalry of Kinsman
15 Murderous Adultery
16 Madness
17 Fatal Imprudence
18 Involuntary Crimes of Love
19 Slaying of a Kinsman Unrecognized
20 Self-Sacrificing for an Ideal
21 Self-Sacrifice for Kindred
22 All Sacrificed for a Passion
23 Necessity of Sacrificing Loved Ones
24 Rivalry of Superior and Inferior
25 Adultery
26 Crimes of Love
27 Discovery of the Dishonor of a Loved One
28 Obstacles to Love
29 An Enemy Loved
30 Ambition
31 Conflict with a God
32 Mistaken Jealousy
33 Erroneous Judgment
34 Remorse
35 Recovery of a Lost One
36 Loss of Loved Ones

However, he also goes on to say that there are only 36 emotions in which human beings feel and express, correlating with the 36 situations. He never attempts to explain what those 36 are.

Maybe if we put our heads together, we can come up with 36? Keep in mind, though that such things as Fear, Terror, Horror, Cowardice and the like are the same thing.

In other words, I'm looking to see if we can come up with 36 different emotions, not 36 thesaurus definitions for the same thing.

And emotions are separate from the physical, so hunger, tiredness, etc. are not really emotions.

Good luck! (hmm, maybe Wariness, Uncertainty is another emotion .. or would that be Fear again?)

Okay ... so so far we have

1. Fear, Cowardice,
2. Jealousy, Envy
3. Bitterness, Anger
4. Happiness, Joy
5. Sadness
6. Love, Affection, Passion
7. Desire
8. Nervousness, Uncertainty, Wariness
9. Boldness, Confidence
10. Shyness, Awkwardness, Embarrassment

Doin' well! (of course, I'm sure all of these are up for grabs to someone)

And I'll add ...

11. Hate (since it goes so closely with love, and yet is still different)

Hmm... is indifference and apathy an emotion, or a lack of emotion?

isn't this a bit like limiting  your vocabulary to 36 words? Without the nuances and each nuance representing a different emotion, just as each shade of blue represents a different mixture of pigments, we are saying then that emotions are black and white in some ways..and that a person might well use jealousy for envy...and mean the same thing. Not to split hairs... but then again without them being split I am not sure I can write or understand the words used to write them...

Love you bud.... and yes I am just a pain sometimes....

there's a whole other world beyond sadness.  it is quite possible to feel 'black' or dead inside.  you failed to mention that one.

Pride
Rebellious
Submissive
Maternal (referring to how people often feel a sense of duty to protect/guide family, friends, etc)

Just a few I thought of...
