I wrote this poem aug. 2. 1999 about my sister, who was homeless for about 2 years.  it's not my best work, but it is full of meaning for me.  I hope you like it.

How About You?

Pollution fills my lungs
My hair is dirty and long
My clothes are torn and ragged
My heart is without song
I hold my head low
And my shoulders slung forward
With shame
I fear the men with drugs and guns
They chase me in the night
I sleep with one eye open
In an alley filled with rats
During the day, I beg for change
And try to buy a meal
But I don't succeed often enough
Do I bring shame to your eyes?
I try I really do
But no one seems to
Want to help me
How about you?

 Hope,
Alicia A. Renzelman

Sorry, I forgot one little thing.  When you read this, don't just forget it.  I want everyone to know of the horrors of life on the street.  How bad could it possibly be for one person?  For my sister?

A moving and thought provoking poem, I shall remember and take appropriate action.

A very sad poem and unfortunately very true. If we stop caring, what will be left ?

Hope stands before us in many disguises
But be alert
Or she may slip away.

When I see beggers in the street it always makes me feel very uneasy.
You never know their story, most would be sad stories I feel.
I would like to think they each find renewal
and recover from thier plight.
But I know really this is probably not the case.  Jon

Yes, very powerful piece, Alicia .... and heartbreaking ....
Is your sister back on her feet now?
She's in my prayers .....

I am sorry your sister has to go through this...is she still on the streets? My prayers are with her.

Love and hugs,
Lizzie

To answer your questions, my sister is no longer on the streets, but it is still a terror that we both face each day.  Thank you all for your concerns.

 Hope,
