"My Colorado Mountain Home"

The evening colors spread across the sky
Unlike any artist’s pallet could ever try.
Rocks, color red, O...graced;
Cerulean sky, boundless as the sea.
"It ‘tis a privilege to live in Colorado…place
I want to be."

O, how I yearn to be;  O, unbridled space, let me roam
To live free on endless plains, this high-desert mountain prairie home.

Where, on splendid vista’s infinite expanse,
Rain and lightning on horizon dance,
And morning skies bounce off the rocky wall,
To paint the earth in hues of red and blue.

O, how I yearn to be;  O, free, let me stay,
Content among the Columbine and Aspen tree.

From the longest peak, to the greatest sands,
The prairie speak of forgotten lands.
Where voices of the "ancient ones" echo off cliff walls,
And heard, are the giant elk and moose, their majestic calls.
Where buffalo roam and eagle soar;
Alas, they’re home once more.

O, how I yearn to be;  O, content, help me see,
To dream of quiet solitude and serenity.

Where flowered mountain meadows disappear into the clouds,
And cool spring waters flow down the mountainsides
From glacial lakes of crystal flakes do feed the fruited fields,
In unending sea of flaxen wheat, undulating in the wind;
Give rise on kindred spirits, soar above the Great Divide.

O, how I yearn to be;  O, dream, let me fly,
To home my sights in, a mile high.

Where towering peaks of glistened steel upon the plains;
Overshadowed by "Shining Mountain’s" rocky range,
Snow-capped heights give nod to starlit nights that sparkle, ebony skied;
In illimitable reach of space, reveal the face of God.

O, how I yearn to be;  O, home, keep me safe,
To live my life in Centennial State.

I’ve traveled this great world of ours, from near, to far and wide,
But my Colorado mountain home, is with me ‘ere I roam.
This is where I’m meant to live, and this is where I’ll die —
For, I shall never find another like thee, if forever, hope or try.

O, how I yearn to be;  O, live, or let die,
To spend eternity in life or death, here let me lie.

And, when it comes time for me to go,
Would some kind-hearted soul
Please say a little prayer for me,
And do no not weep, but bury deep;
My bones within my Colorado Mountain Home.

 It often comes to me at night
When lights are dim
And thoughts are bright.

As I ponder what to write,
Take pen in hand and with it make
My words appear as no mistake.

Guided by a force unknown,
I create a new and wondrous poem.   ~Gene~

This is wonderful Gene! My best friend lives in Colorado and I will be visitng her in a few months so I will be able to see those "Rocks, color red," again!

I've never been to Colorado and from your poem I see I'm missing a great deal.  For some reason as I read this I envisioned Indian ancestry.  Beautiful poem, beautifully written (as usual).

Thank you, Gene!  Though I may never be able to afford a trip to Colorado, I will always feel as though I have been there.  This was wonderful.
