They say women define themselves by their relationships
And men define themselves by their jobs....Ugh!!!

I yelled at the barmaid HEY GIMME A BEER
I'm sorry I forgot my manners my dear
You see I've been working all day like a fool
I'm tired and hurting and want one that's cool.

I now have been working forty years even more
And soon will get kicked right out of the door
I've lifted and lugged and carried that stuff
I rarely complained now my back's had enough.

I made all the choices the fault is all mine
At twenty years old the future looked fine
I breathed all that poison, with hands cut to shreds
I shrugged and worked harder,I have no regrets.

A refill dear barmaid and one for you too
The day's looking better from this point of view
Once more is once less used to be my theme song
Of late it occurs that life soon may be gone

With kids and grandchildren I'm blessed as are few
A wife who still loves me, a lucky man who
has many fine friends that love me a lot.
Why am I complaining my life's not yet shot.

So drinks all round barmaid and a tip here for you
No more for me thank you I have things to do
I've got to get home now , get ready to go
The night shift's short handed I'm needed you know

For in spite of my whining I still love my work
I do as I please even act like a jerk
But when I am working the pain disappears
I recall all the good times of forty long years.

May I take a little space to say to Denise, to Poet de Vine and all who read and write in the Pub.....What an incredible place , and a wonderful group of people....thank you all for being.
A special thank you to Freckles who recently gave me an intro to poetry.....Who would have thought?

(blushing shyly......yeah, right)  Thanks to you, twinsgd for gently pushing me to this site.  Sharing my poetry has been more rewarding than I ever thought it would or could be.  As I've mentioned before, my writing is therapy for my soul; having somebody read and even enjoy it is a bonus.  Now, on to your poem...this is absolutely wonderful!!  Please keep writing, twinsgd.
