His Majesty

A man living on the street
sitting in front of our downtown library.
Not begging, just literally chilling.
shocked when seen and spoken to.

His life worn as appearance,
chic would not be his word.
His odor his best defense
keeps the phonies and freaks at bay.

Cold January nip in the air
trash dancing, cavorting in the wind.
His Majesty introduces himself
offers to share his domain.

Flashing on Hollywood
all those trips we been fed.
Pausing to speak with madness
glimpse of other worlds refreshing.

“Reality is vastly overrated
in fact, it’s illegal in my realm.
I’ve banned the  worship of reality.”
The king of downtown declares.

Bug eyed, he passes his decrees
ignored by his indifferent subjects,
They only see him as idle...crazed,
a man living on the street.

“Walk on by... slide your eyes on by
  Never, ever meet his eyes!
Don’t listen to what he says,
   just another crazy at play
   pull your children away...
  Never, ever meet his eyes!
Walk on by.. .slide your eyes on by"

His Majesty is living on the streets...

from his arm,
Captain!"

Hi bleeding, we all need to be jostled out of our comfort zone.  This is one of the jobs of the poet/writer…to narrow in and focus on what needs to be said.  To introspectively look at a slice of life and see what is really there, what we are missing or refused to see.  There is much food for thought out there and we as poets  have the words and the skills to prepare it consumption by others who don’t see.

Now with that said, this is a wonderful slice of reality, well said and true.  We must remember that the people that live on the streets or the ones who seems strange to us, do have a story and that they are also real.  That at one time and still, they were a son, daughter, father, mother, sister or brother…and so and so forth

Gimme more!

Wow, bleeding!  Nice message, well written. It sort of reminds me of the movie "The Fisher King".

To love another person is to see the face of God.

I just love some of the lines that you use in this poem!

"Not begging, just literally chilling."

"Pausing to speak with madness
glimpse of other worlds refreshing."

"Reality is vastly overrated"

There is so much truth in your words and the image that you have created sends a message that's hard to ignore!

Thanks for sharing this, it's worth reading again and again.
