Are we flying? She asks, wide-eyed,
as the engine begins to roar, and the windows rattle
like an angry beast awakened.

No, Amanda, not yet.

And later, high above the snowy clouds,
her tears lay wet near my cheek as I hold her tight.
Are we almost there?

No, Amanda, not yet.

Watching her chest rise and fall as she naps,
I am reminded of her mother, small, pale and broken.
Is mommy better? She asked me yesterday.

No, Amanda, not yet.

Can I go home? She will ask days from now,
a tiny child, thrust unwillingly into her great-aunts care
and with heavy heart, I will say again and again,

No, Amanda, not yet.

Debbie, you paint a very real and tragic act, but one that is carried out far to many times. You make it so very near, this must have happened to you or someone you know. A touching poem, you are blest with insight if this is not a true story

It's difficult to deal with feelings of helpless isolation ........but you have captured it well here.

Very nice

Oh dear... This made me cry.. *sniffles*  A good cry, but still..    Very touching and heart felt.. I really like it

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.

Thanks for your comments and yes this is true.  A late-night phonecall about a month ago turned my life as I know it upside-down.  A few days later, I found myself flying across the country to meet a small child I barely knew.
I am happy to say that things are going well and I finally have a little more time to devote myself to this wonderful forum!
