I wrote this about two weeks after my dog died in December 1996.

You were wee and small, to you I was big and tall
Four legs and two, that was me and you
He said we needed you, I said we didn't
I never knew I would become so dependent

Being a Silky suited you fine
and I'm so glad you became mine
When attention was what you were needing
You were welcome in my lap without even pleading

Whether going to grandpas, or traveling far
You were always excited to jump in the car
A ball in a sock you loved to chase
no other toy could take it's place

Baths were fine, No, the blowdryer wasn't fair
So you would run along the sofa to smooth your hair
You always knew when I was the least bit troubled
Tensions would ease when you came to me and snuggled

When a stranger was at our door at 2 a.m.
Little you protected me even then

You were young and only six
Your injury I couldn't fix

I'm sorry Baby Dog, I tried my best
Please understand and get some rest.

This poem reminded me of the very first dog I had and lost. About the guilt of playing God, to decide over life and death, the pain and the emptiness and yet it brought back all the wonderful memories too. The love and joy and the strong bond we had. Thank you for sharing this and thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories. And uhh....welcome to the Pub

This is so touching, Beverly. I've lost a couple of dogs (one through divorce) and I just recently lost my cat. I know how much it hurts. This is a lovely poem for your little precious baby dog!

Hi Beverly,

Your poem really touched me.  I truly understand how you felt.  I have animals I love very dearly.  In 9/87 I lost one of my Pomeranians whom was so very dear to me.  I still can't talk about her without getting tearful.  Keep writing the beautiful heartfelt poetry.
