Portrait of a Grandson

He's charming, he's funny, annoying and sweet
He's got hands full of dimples and wings on his feet
A step out of babyhood into a boy
A pocket of dreams and a bundle of joy

He smothers you up in his whimsical charms
You get caught in the web of his kisses and arms
He's cunning and skillful to get what he needs
And very adept at mischievous deeds

He's got curls on his head and a scratch on his knee
A smile that entices, a laugh full of glee
He's got eyes that are magnets and skin that is fair
And peanut butter remnants stuck in his hair

He's got skills in linguistics of words never sung
Unimaginable syllables flow from his tongue
With expressions and gestures to go with it all
And comical faces that you never saw

His speed at destruction is hard to consume
And you feel like a hurricane swept through the room
But he quickly turns any annoyance to shame
When he gives hugs and kisses and whispers your name

A one year old grandson - he just can't be beat!
He's charming, he's funny, annoying and sweet

I love this. I could see everything, from the knees to the hair. I don't yet have grandchildren (or even children I'm 16) but I can see how you feel and your love for him.

If you love something let it go... if it comes back it's yours... if it doesn't it never was.

Liz,

This time, I knew from the start that you were talking about grandson.
Your love for him is expressed so well.

Liz, I love this one   You've put a big smile on my face
Is being a Grandmother just as grand as being a mother ? Sigh, I sometimes miss the time they were as adorable as you painted.

I have a smile from ear to ear and your poem put it there. I have three teenagers and I love them very much but they keep me on my toes every minute with what seems to be weighty stuff, but this poem makes me want to go and give hugs and kisses to them and tell them I love them.

Thank you for this great feeling!!!!

Cerenity, yes there is! At the top of Elizabeth's poem on the right hand side there is an envelope icon that says 'send'. Click on that and enter your email address and there you have it!  I'm sure Elizabeth will be thrilled to see that you liked it so much!! It brought me quite a few smiles too!

Thank you all for your kind replies to this poem. I'm sure many can relate, and please feel free to copy it
And to rich-pa, please teach me free verse. It's so hard for me
Thanks
Liz

Liz..I don't often come over here from Open Forum but this morning I thought I'd look in on everyone here and see what was new...I found a big breathe of fresh air on your poem here. I simply loved it.  I too am getting myself a copy to give to my mother...she always appreciated a great poem such as this.

Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

This was delightful! And could only be written by a grandparent; the parents would be too exhausted to write it, and too irritated most of the time to think that way.

Reminds me so much of my own little "bundle of joy", several years back.....

A splendid job! Thank you for sharing that with us.

Exile

PS - Hope you still feel so tenderly toward him when he gets to be, oh, say 14....

Beautiful portrait you've painted here, Liz! This is definitely going on my wall!
