We are our mother's salvation.
Each month the child support rolls in,
and as our mother simultaneously
rolls out of the driveway,
my sister and I settle in to our
weekend roles...the ones that involve
raising our half-sister,
who is not yet a year old.

We learned from an early age
how to cook and clean, wash clothes,
be self sufficient...sometimes
left alone for nights, now days,
as mother pursues her latest victim.
When we asked to live with our Dad,
the guilt was laid on thickly
and we unwittingly succumbed to it.

Our mother needs us,
if not for us she might have to work...
get a job, clean her own house,
raise her own little baby.
How sad that she might not have any
receptacles for her psychotic notions.
We have been good daughters,
but we have had our fill.

So, Happy Mother's Day from both of us -
we'd like to buy a card,
but so far we can't find one
to express the sentiments we feel.
In this day and age, you'd think
there'd be a card for each unique situation,
even ours, one new millenium mom...

absent, again, as mother's day fell on a weekend.

A sad senario, forced to grow up too soon on on account of one who can't or won't try. A all too frequent case in many families. A serious subject well expressed .

Jana, I am deeply touched by your poem. My heart hurts for you and your sisters. I am sorry. May your storms soon end. (((HUGS)))

Jana, that was a beautiful tribute. I felt a little tear in my eye ( that is as close I get to crying normally) honestly. yes it is quite sad, but so beautifully written. A damn fine poem. One of my favourites of your excellent collection of poems.

"I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else"-Richey Edwards

"Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time".

"Libraries gave us power
Then work came and made us free
What price now for a shallow piece of dignity"
Nicky Wire, A design for Life.

"Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
Culture, alienation, boredom and despair"

"To be nobody-but-yourself-in a world which is doing its best night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting."

E.E Cummings.
