Balaam was a prophet,
Uttered words from the LORD,
Was headed to the Promise Land,
To take it by the sword!

Now Balak, king of Moab,
Saw all the Israelites had done,
The Decimation of the Amorites,
Caused other nations to run!

But Balak had a plan,
To avoid extermination,
Offered Balaam many gifts of Gold,
To put a curse on the Israel nation!

Repeatedly Balak sent princes',
Offers of Gold and Honour sweet,
For Balaam to curse GOD's people,
And bring them sure defeat!

Balaam said "GOD won't allow it",
But he could of sounded half-hearted,
"Cause He knew what GOD wanted,
But with those princes', Balaam departed!

The LORDS anger was now kindled,
'Cause on that journey Balaam went,
Riding on a donkeys back,
Then GOD, an adversary sent!

An Angel, with sword in hand,
Was standing in their path,
Tho' the prophet did not discern this,
Balaam's donkey tried to avoid GOD's Wrath!

The donkey turned abruptly, out of the path,
Balaam stuck that poor donkey sore,
He directed the donkey back ,
Continuing the trip once more!

The Angel now stood in the narrow path,
A wall close on each side,
No way to step around the Angel,
I'd be difficult to turn and hide!

Next the donkey turned hard into the wall,
Balaam's foot got crushed in between,
He struck the donkey, now twice,
He was getting unhappy and mean!

The walls now narrowed even more,
Only one-way could they go,
The donkey fell down under Balaam,
Her rider, she did throw!

Balaam's anger now fully kindled,
Struck the donkey with his staff,
This made three times now,
This donkey had suffered his wrath!

The LORD opened the mouth of the donkey,
It said, "What have I done to thee,
That you have repeatedly hit me,
Yes you struck me, now times three?"

Balaam said, "It's 'cause you mock me,
If I only had a sword right now,
I would not hesitate to use it,
I would kill you quick anyhow!"

The donkey said "Haven't I always served you,
Been faithful to your demands every day,
Did I ever fail to respect your wishes?"
Balaam said "No" and had to look away!

Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam,
He saw the Angel with sword in the way,
Balaam bowed, fell flat on his face,
Listened to all that the Angel had to say!

You ask what do we learn here?
What wisdom does this story impart?
It's not enough to know GOD's will,
You must also follow with your heart!

When you know GOD's will,
There's nothing to negotiate,
Don't be distracted by earthly riches,
And miss Heaven's pearly gate!

GOD's word tells us to obey HIM,
Don't let satan tempt you with Gold,
Don't take your eyes off of JESUS,
And you'll end up with Blessings untold!

This is a retelling of the bible story found in Numbers Chapter 22

dear dennis: How wonderfully you have put this scripture to verse. It was fascinating to read and isn't it grand the many ways that our Lord speaks to us and doesn't He have a wonderful sense of humor? Thank you Dennis, Ellie

This is well told, Dennis.  I've always found this particular story amusing.  Not so much because the donkey spoke but that Balaam answered back as though this was an everyday occurance.  Hard not to imagine Eor's voice too.    Good work on this.  Thanks for the read.

Dear Dennis,
You have hit upon a marvelous use of your talents in recounting great Bible stories,
and helping us see the lessons and benefits intended by them.  And you do such a wonderful job at it. Personally I would like to see you write many more like this and put them in a unique Bible Stories in Verse Book, by Dennis L. White--I think that would be fantastic!!! Keep up the good work Brother, I'm mighty proud of You!   David

God does sure have a sense of humor...though I'm not sure if I would have answered the donkey, I think I would have stood there totally dumbfounded.  You've done a great job putting this to verse

I loved reading this in verse and I think you should take David's suggestion very seriously.  Wouldn't such a book make a unique, touching gift?

I agree on the book thing, and I love this story. It's one of my faves. But also this story shows our ignorance as a simple donkey can see & hear & feel but he didn't till the animal talked to him. Funny and great tale.
Great Job.
Sincerely
Rwood

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. Perhaps a book of Bible stories in verse could become a future project! There are SO MANY wonderful Bible stories which could be applied to verse, that a new audience would benefit reading them in that form, but as always, TO GOD BE THE GLORY! Thanks again, Dennis :^)

Dennis,
I applaud your work and agree with David about the book ... I have never heard this bibical story and enjoyed the way you told it here .... I think many people, like myself, that are not versed in the Bible, would definetly benefit from this kind of writing ....
Loved this ....
Your friend,
Shannon
