"When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well." Matthew 5:39

Shepherds in Black Ivory
By: Noah Eaton
7/3/02

Hammurabi used to see violence,
and thievery abound
He believed “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”
was his code law's crown
He valued retaliation,
but only through equivalence of injury
Until Jesus studied this Book of Leviticus
and began forbidding this contrary

Proportions don’t mean anything
when dealing with a common crime
It’s all about turning the other cheek
when one gives the right cheek in sight
And it doesn’t mean
to get hasty or violent
If someone steals your cloak,
go ahead and also hand them your tunic

Some people think He’s crazy,
this just isn’t fair
Yet there’s a significance hidden deep
in the big picture reasonable to compare
To swear vengeance on someone
only leads dissatisfaction to others
After all, life is never that fair,
we just have to believe in the simple creed of loving one another

So next time you meet a wrong-doer of small proportions,
refuse to make evil from evil
Avoid the violence and eloquence,
for together we can make peace regal
May we all embrace His greater standard
of love with open arms
And work to make home sweet home
more comely under the stars

For we can all be,
shepherds in black ivory
Courageously facing the flames
of greed and purgery
Invite Mr. Bluebird to sing on your shoulder,
and recite worldly sunshine and amends
Hopefully bringing together a happy world
reigning with His love from end to end...

"Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..."

Shakira

What a nice way of looking at things Noah.  Forgiving our enemies is so much better than getting reveng.  Joyce

An amazing work I still have so much to learn.  I look forward to the lessons yet to be taught.  Thouroughly enjoyable.

This is your best I believe.. a great message.. well written.. May I kindly offer a suggestion as sometimes less can be better, how about ending it with these lines?

For we can all be,
shepherds in black ivory
Courageously facing the flames

Good poem - great message. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people unwilling to turn the other cheek. However, you're making a difference each time your poem is read.

Thanks,
Melton

A wonderful way of re-inforcing a very important lesson from the words of God.  Very nice writing and a very cool way to live each day.  Much enjoyed.

Noah,

WOW!  What a great story teller you are.  Oh, what a wonderful world would it be if we could all think and act with the larger proportions that you've described rather than thinking and acting with those that so often come natural to mankind.  I love your vision here.  Very Heavenly.  GOD bless you and may GOD continue to shine His beautiful light of love and peace into your sweet sprit my poet friend.

Hi Noah. That lesson took me a while b4 I got it. B4 I thought it would be timid if one doesn't protect her own family, and does something to even it. Now I'm learning to see the other way. I'm still trying... Hopefully I will really get the lesson soon. bye now Noah.

Your piece, both touching and inspirational, is well written. When my self pride's involved, I turn the other cheek, but when it's my family, I don't seek revenge, but do take a stand for truth. Some others, will continue badgering until you draw that line.
Thank you,
Rae
