Nan....here it is.  Sorry it took so long.

Watching the leaf floating down the river
I sit on the dock and sigh
I wonder what kinds of things
The leaf has seen and felt over time

Once it was part of a beautiful tree
And had many friends on the branches
Until one day it was blown to the ground
A wind came along and tossed it about

Finally the leaf landed in the cool water
Where it was swept along
By the swift current down the river
That is how it came to me

In many ways my life is parallel
To that of the solitary leaf
Being carried along by forces unknown
As the scenery of life passes by

One day the leaf will no longer
Be swept away by the rushing water
It will end up on the soil
Where it will breakdown in composition

And that one solitary leaf
Will return to Mother Earth
Some day it will venture out again
...Born anew and full of life

I loved this Lone Wolf.  Using a Leaf as a parallel to yourself.  Wonderful!!

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, not the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friendship."

Daniel,
Thank you very much.  Was not sure on where to start, but today it just came to me.  That muse is amazing....there when you are not even looking.  Glad that you enjoyed it!!!

Yep... The analogy of the leaf to your own life is a great theme for extended metaphor. As a matter of fact, it's one of the most creative ideas I see in this workshop...

You can take it even a step further by omitting the open comparisons to your own life.  When your reader can absorb your words, and visualize the leaf floating along its path - and see the comparison to the path of life, you've truly mastered extended metaphor... Nice ride here..

Strong wind blows the leaf~
Soaring wild,its path unknown~
Like clueless blur me

allow me to write this haiku ")
yes,i feel like the leaf too, having absolute no control over the natural elements...but what i like about your poem is that you have included a very positive tone at the end, giving me some hope for the leaf ")

Nan,
Thank you very much.  Just came to me one day and I started writing.

I see what you mean by omitting the open comparisons to my own life and allowing the reader to be carried down the stream with the leaf.  Thank you!!  Glad you enjoyed the ride.

Kaile,
Thank you for the haiku!!  I am touched.  You are welcome and I thought the leaf (and I) deserved some hope.

Munda,
Thanks.....you too!!
