I sit in the darkness,
Remembering, tears sliding down my cheek
Thinking about who's desk I'm sitting at
Makes it difficult for me to speak

I'm imagining him sitting across from me
In his favorite Florida chair
When I come back to reality and look up
I realize he isn't there

In the physical sense he's gone forever
This realization fills my eyes with tears
But I know that memories of him
Will be with us through all of our years.

I remember the way his face would light up
When a loved one would enter the room
No matter how annoyed or angry you were
One look at that smile and away went the gloom

His wonderful smile and sweet personality
Are something I'll never forget
And I know in my heart that when he left this world
He left without a single regret

No, he will not be around to meet a great-grandkid
Or attend another graduation
But he lived 80 long filled with life years
And for this we need no explanation

As my father has said, and I'll say it again
Baba as we fondly called him had a passion for life
His life filled with love from and for so many
Great friends, grandkids, kids, and a wonderful wife

He loved playing sports-golf and tennis
And a lover of Monday night football too
He filled his life with music
Singing and dancing with Sissy were things he loved too

Once again I'll say it- 80 long years he lived
And never seen without a smile upon his face
Please know that he was greatful for every moment
That he got to spend in this place

I know it's hard for everyone here
To grasp this reality, to understand
How could we ever have known it would be so sudden?
How could we ever have planned?

Since no one can answer these questions I've asked
I leave you all, his family and friends with this thought
Remember him always, keep him in your heart
Remember everything you've learned, everything he taught

Never forget the biggest grin you've ever seen
On the kind, caring man who from this earth had to depart
Never forget Raymond "Baba" Feine
He'll always be right in your heart.

...I originally wrote this poem to read tomorrow at my grandfather's funeral.  Instead, I decided I'm only going to share it with my close family.  I'd love to hear any comments from anyone!

That's such a good poem. Very sad, but at the same time, I'm sure it helped you to write this...to get your feelings out. It's hard to lose a Loved one. All my sympathy.

Thank you very much for responding.  I really appreciate it.     Your right, writing this kind of helped me, it's giving me a sense of closure.

One thing I just noticed...at the end of the 7th stanza...it should be "things he liked TO DO"...not "things he liked too"  (I'm not THAT bad at rhyming.     Thanks!!
