my breath leaves a cloud suspended in the air, as I step outside
the evening so crisp and dry
stars sparkling in a riotous cascade
while the moon glows inside a rainbow ring
jacket zipped to my chin
gloves and boots, and my hat on too
horses nicker in the stillness
prompted by the door's familiar squeak
the dog leaps at my feet
the cat following close behind
Stopping for a moment
I inhale deeply
ice cold air so painful in my lungs
yet, so fresh and reviving
I stand, drinking in my surroundings
enjoying the peace that night brings

*Rustle*

my heart races, as the bushes come alive near my feet
my eyes wide and alert
and as I peer into the shadows, I begin to giggle
as my cat comes tumbling out
the dog shoves her nose against my hand
asking her silent question, "Are you alright?"
I pat her in reassurance and head for the barn
pushing open the door
I slip in out of the cold
the horses' happy calls greet me

inside, my nose is assaulted by 'horsey' smells
orchard grass
alfalfa
straw
molasses
fly spray
and the tang of their stalls

my old mare whinnies and sneezes
as she stomps her feet and bobs her head
anxious to have her night's meal
she asks for her oats with a questioning nose
extended over her stall wall
tossing her an extra flake of hay, to ward off the cold
I scratch her jaw and turn my attention to the filly
approaching her stall, I am greeted with laid back ears,
shining teeth, and a ferocious stare
"She thinks she's so tough", I say to the dog and cat
the filly snakes her head after me as I pour her oats
I laugh and kiss her velvety nose
feeling her warm alfalfa kiss
as she breathes on my face
tho' some would be appalled
I love a 'horsey' kiss

unable to resist, I wander back to the old mare
hugging her as she stands so contendedly, crunching her oats
slipping off my gloves, I slide my hands under her mane
to feel her warmth
she ignores my attentions and goes on with her meal
I kiss her warm neck, wrapping my arms so tight around her
whispering what a beautiful, wonderful horse she is against her fluffy coat
I lean up and ask her in her ear, making sure the question isn't missed
"What's it this time Babe, a filly or a stud colt"
she looks at me with liquid eye, as if to say ,"We have seven more months to wait"
tho' some would be appalled
I love a 'horsey' hug

I give their stalls and water one last check
as I bid my beautiful ladies goodnight, with a fond pat and a kiss
closing the door firmly behind me
and head towards the house
where a warm fire and cup of coffee awaits
dog and cat shadows following closely behind

While I will pass on the alfalfa breath, I thoroughly enjoyed your words...
