Walter Payton

He was known as Sweetness,
The greatest Chicago Bear.
The best of all the players.
He played his game with flair.

Football was his greatest game
His feet were quick like wind
Playing in the rain and snow,
He must have been thick-skinned.

He always did for many
Those less fortunate than him
And had a sense of humor
With people on a whim

I remember when he played
Those years I used to watch
The best I've ever seen
He simply was top notch

The day that he retired
I know I sat and cried.
But this time I have tears
Cause Walter now has died.

It seems he's lost his battle
On this wet and rainy day
This was when he did his best
In this weather when he'd play.

Now that he has passed away
His football days are gone
This man that we call Sweetness
In our memories lives on.

Not being a football fan, I will not comment on the content, but the verse is well crafted and written.

Walt, well, at least they called you by the stars names, the great people anyway. Must be fitting for you as you fit in that catagory. Yes, it made me sad to hear of him passing! A great loss it is!

Thank you Hoot!

Thanks much Watcher.

Micahel yes he was "Sweetness" indeed! My prayer go out to his family!

Thanks D.A. I appreciate it. HUGS

When I turned on the TV last night, his face was on the screen... and I knew his pain was over... but the memory that immediately popped into my mind was not the man thanking the people of Jackson for signing organ donor cards after his illness was announced... it wasn't even the man with the flying feet on a journey to the end zone... It was Sweetness doing his thing in the "We are the Bears, shufflin' through" video made before their New Orleans Super Bowl appearance... a memory that always makes me smile. *S* Great tribute, WhtDove!

Ah.. another work of art by the Dove..
Walter will be missed here on earth and I know he is on the starting line up on the true all star team in heaven.... Sweetness by no other name could hold a candle to his geatnees a truly remarkable man on the field and off.. I will miss him ..

Suthern how true. We sold that video where I worked at the time, and it was constantly playing. It was a great memory. I think what I remembered was the day he retired and knelt down on the field, and everyone had tears. It was after that a while I lost interest in the game. Never been the same without him! The Super Bowl Shuffle, what a rememberance though. Thanks Suthern!

Tori well said. I couldn't agree with you more (on Walter that is)! He truly will be missed!

I saw him once on the Chicago field, later appreciated his humbleness; know for a fact he was a role model our children should have now, and don't.

He will be greatly missed. You did a fine job, Whtdove.
