Whence Has She Gone? To a dream too often I give an ode A leisurely walk on a lonely road. A countryscape A great escape To wander and ponder my heavy load. Merry birds sing from their treetop abode, Speaking of me in unknowable code. A sunny day A winding way Through woods wild and fields fallow and unhoed. Dost the rest of mankind forsake this place? And Alas! Through the brush, I spy a face. Sapphires for eyes Jewels so wise Excited am I! I quicken my pace. Way over yonder! I begin to race. Alas! Distance and shadows veil her face. A breeze blowing Her hair flowing A wondrous figure of beauty and grace. At last to this lovely ghost I draw near A lady so strange, and yet oh so dear Oh! Such a fright! She's gone from sight. Whence has she gone? Eternity, I fear. And then I awake, soaked with sweat and tear My bedroom! No singing birds, trees, nor deer. Oh! Such a night! Oh! Such a plight! Whence has she gone? To Nowhere, I must fear. |
