I stepped through your door
and felt right at home -
you smiled, took me in,
like I was your own.
While under your care
I took root & grew -
I dreamed and created,
I owe this to you.
Much time you invested
with hopes that I'd bloom
and become somebody
a light amidst gloom.
As a flower I blossomed
and leaned toward your light
you were an example
of all that was right.
Your lasting impression
is etched in my heart
and the time has now come
for me to depart.
But before saying farewell
one thing I must do
I'll take just a moment
to encourage you...
Sometimes it may seem
all attempts are in vain
all you do goes unnoticed
sunny days turn to rain.
But if ever you feel like -
you've done no one good
just remember this flower
who in your warm presence stood....

*Written for my English teacher my senior year in High School...Mrs. Christman. She loved my poetry, and encouraged me to write & publish. It is because of her I had faith enough to continue my dream.....she awarded me her "poet of the year" out of her 400 students! What an honor!!! I will never forget her influence in my life. Thanks to all the teachers who make a difference and reach out to their students....

There's a thread way-back-where (The English Teacher) where a number of us talk about the influence that good teachers have played in our lives. I said something to the effect, "I've forgotten the names and faces of lovers, but still fondly remember those who encouraged me to learn..."

Your poem is a vivid, beautiful reminder of why that is true...

An excellent tribute..there are a few teachers that I've had that have had the same effect on me. Great job!

I wanted to send this 'ol thing back through for Nan to read....I use to think I'd like to be a teacher, but I know how frustrating it must be....such patience! If only you could know how many lives you influence, maybe that would make it worthwhile !! With a new school year beginning, I say "Hats off!" to all the teachers that help make our children who they are !!
