It had been with us three weeks now,
I'm speaking of our Barred owl.

Everyday day he would perch in a new tree,
Ghosting from limb to limb in silent majesty.

This old winter was colder than cold,
Nearly put Christmas itself on hold.

He huddled there when it was near thirty below,
Pathetically braving the worst of the snow.

We started feeding him mice, to get him to stay,
He came to be fed at the same times everyday.

We'd put them on a felt covered stand,
Until I decided to try feeding by hand.

I had never announced my intentions aloud,
Yet somehow that day, I drew quite a crowd.

Not being reckless, I put on a welder's glove.
That little idea I'm particularly proud of.

I went to select a mouse, it had to be just right.
Lab mice are bred to be dumb, to put up no fight.

As soon as I touched the door he hopped
From foot to foot, then promptly stopped.

As I approached with the white mouse in hand,
He grew wary when it wasn't put on the stand.

Standing still, I raised my hand, holding it high,
With nary a whisper of wings, he decided to try.

In silent majesty, he launched from his tree,
Swooping down, elegantly he headed for me.

If I hadn't been watching, I'd have missed the hit,
So gently and precisely did he grab hold of it.

Spinning in the air, he flew back to his pine tree,
Hurriedly eating the prize he had taken from me.

This is just something I wanted to share with you,
Hopefully you'll have an experience like it too.

Dream, that sounds like a truly magical experience! I would love to have one like it someday.... ever fed and petted a dolphin? I think that experience might come close! ~one voice~
