She stood in the church dressed in white
A bouquet clutched tightly in her hand
She had walked down the aisle eloquently
Now was the time to take her stand

The room was quiet as churches often are
The pews packed with people she knew
The words were racing through her mind
She knew what she had to do

Her wedding day was always a dream
Wishes made from girlhood long past
She thought of how she’d made it here
To be standing at the alter at last

Her love she had come to proclaim
To show to the world her devotion
Her eyes filled with unshed tears
Her voice choked full of emotion

She turned to face those in the church
Swallowed back all of her fears
Her friends, her family, mixes of young and old
Who had seen her change through the years

To them she gave her simple speech
A wedding would not take place today
It seems the groom had an accident,
He died along the way

The shock on the faces and the stir of the crowd
And then the beautiful bride broke down
It seems the call came just moments before
From the hospital across the town

The tragedy of the love that was
And the wedding that wouldn’t be
And the bride who delivered the news herself
With such emotional bravery

The sadness of those who came to share
In a celebration of man and wife
Now became mournful reflection
On the shortness of life.

Oh, wow. I take each segment slowly, and had a totally different ending...and then your ending came...and I was hit hard. I hope this wasn't you, for you drew the picture so well.

No Sunshine, just another of the tragic fiction pieces I so love to write. I am glad you appreciated the story, I always like the endings to be an emotional shock.
