when you think of the word friend,
what does it represent? according to
my dictionary it means a patron, a supporter. And roget lists many synonyms: acquaintance,
amigo, confidant, mate. but to me it is much more.
my friend is me. he is me. simple
words but ones deep with meaning.

from the very beginning when
he shared his deepest secret,
i knew this was something to last a lifetine.
we share many things. like views
on politics, religion, sex, life in general and
not so general, but yet we can disagree.
that's the beauty of this word.

friend: just what is my definition of the word?
he who recognizes the times he must
utilize pain in order to teach and will do so.
who is pained by this action as well.
he is wise and empathetic - sometimes sarcastic.
and always searching for more.
more knowledge ... answers to many things.
recognizing that knowledge for what it is.
armor against the wrongs that are done.

he also understands when pain must be replaced
with charity. and at those times he opens his
heart fully to me offering all his support and love.
but also standing aside when he knows
i have to go it alone. yet, i always know
if i need him, he will be there.

so, what is your definition of the word, friend?
if you find yourself having to look it up,
then i feel a deep sadness for you because
of what you have missed and have never known.
