Jack was the average senior in high school.  He didn’t stand out in any sports or activities, and was basically a nobody.  That is, until he started dating Rita, the most popular girl in school, around the end of first quarter.  Girls constantly asked what she saw in him, and guys, always the more practical of the genders, just wanted to know how far he had gotten with her.  No matter which side you asked, though, it was a match made in heaven.  Simply put, they were perfect for each other, even if Jack wasn’t quite “good enough” for Rita.

Jack and Rita graduated from high school that summer and were going to go to the same college in the fall.  Unfortunately, this match made in heaven was separated before it could go any further.  Rita was killed in a freak traffic accident with her mother and father two weeks before Jack and Rita were due to leave for college.  The funeral was tough for Jack.  He had grown close to Rita’s family as well.

The night of the funeral, Jack was restless.  He sat for hours watching the first snow of the season drift down to dust the ground.   He finally drifted off to sleep in the big easy chair next to the window.

It was only a dream.  It had to be.  It was far to absurd to be anything but a dream, wasn’t it?

He dreamt that night of awakening from the easy chair next to the window to see Rita walking up to his front door.  He hurried over to the door and greeted her.  It was just like old times, before she was gone.  Jack slipped on his shoes and went outside with her.  They danced to unheard music in his front lawn.  Th moonlight glistened upon Rita's hair.  Their eyes locked in passion, their minds becoming one, and nothing in the world mattered.  The light dusting of snow was cold on Jack’s feet.  (Amazing how real dreams could be)  The music died down, and he dance came to a close.  And then, Rita was gone, leaving only the scattering of footprints in the lawn.  It was a short, abbreviated visit, but Jack enjoyed it no less.

In the dream, Jack went back inside, slipped off his shoes, and went back to sleep in the big easy chair by the window.

Jack awoke late that morning, only a few minutes before noon.  By that time, the sun had come out and the footprints that circled in the front lawn had disappeared.

Welcome to Passions!
And welcome to Prose!

Not often that a user makes their first post in here!

Thank you for this tale of love, tossed in with a bit of a hint at the supernatural!

I loved this story, short, but beautiful and sad none the less. You write a touching tale, and an exceptional first post. I'd like to offer one comment, that expanding on the death of Rita and the emotions involved would add to an already great story. Excellent, I hope to see more from you!
