One of my students went home yesterday. He arrived the day after I started working there. It’s strange not having him around now. He’s come a long way and I’m very proud of the progress he has made.

10 months ago, he was living on the streets, selling his body and addicted to heroin. Today, he is a high school senior with a good head on his shoulders. He is the one the rest of our students look up to and model themselves after.
He is the goal they are striving for.

I have seen him turn his life completely around. He is the one who showed me that people CAN change. When he first arrived, he was the type of person I wouldn't let near my children. Last week during a staff meeting, he is the one I trusted to play with my children and keep them busy.

He is always there to listen to his peers, to offer advice, a shoulder to cry on. He pushes himself to his greatness. He has wisdom beyond his years, and because of this has earned himself the nickname "Obi Wan".

He inspires me; he inspires all of our students. He has raised their awareness of themselves and others. He has shown them compassion and love.

After I put him on the plane, I called his mom and cried for 20 minutes. He has made a profound impact on my life and I’ll never forget him. Obi Wan, I salute you, wherever you are.

This is so inspirational. People can change. I think a mix of love and positive action - not appeasement - can help a person get on that journey to change. Thanks for sharing this, a story of hope.
