uuuuuummmm……… Have you ever noticed how important this is to us? uuumm, uhhh, hmmm….. I was listening to my mother on the phone the other night, and in approximately 1 minute and a half, she said “um” 28 times. That is an average of once every 3.something seconds. Have you ever tried to talk without using these sounds? It is really very difficult. So what is the purpose of this? Why, when I know exactly what I am going to say? Why do I interrupt myself with ums? I can understand it as a thinking noise if one is pondering what to say, but how, and when, did ummm become so habitual? ------------------ Thinking is just what a great many people think they are doing when they are merely rearranging their predjudices. |

My opinion on the matter is that we are thinking when we say "umm." Though the purpose may differ from time to time, it is a way of delaying action while we think. |
