She never knew she was beautiful.

As she had gone through life, she had had few loves.  Those few had an enormous influence on her.  They had shown her that she was undesirable.

She never knew she was beautiful.

Those few had destroyed her self-image by cheating, lying, and worst of all, leaving.  Both physically and emotionally they had withdrawn, leaving her alone, an empty shell.

She never knew she was beautiful.

A couple of those few had been her best friends.  Nothing more.  No matter what they said, what she longed for, in truth they had never been more than that.  These ones left her feeling ugly, unwanted, as they proved time and again that they didn’t desire her.

She never knew she was beautiful.

Her friends tried to tell her, tried to show her that she was, that guys wanted her.  She could not see it.

She never knew she was beautiful.

He walked into her life.  Quickly became her best friend.  This developed into something more.  She wanted him.  She loved him as no else before.

She never knew she was beautiful.

She couldn’t see that he loved her in return, but he did.  He convinced her that he did, and asked her out.

She never knew she was beautiful.

He learned of the image she held of herself.  He was amazed that someone so gorgeous would believe herself hideous.  He tried to convince her, tried to show her all the guys who desired her.  She just could not see it.

She never knew she was beautiful.

One night, he kissed her long and deep, then sighed against her mouth and opened his eyes.

“God I love you” was all he said to her.  No proclamations of beauty, no odes to her eyes, her hair, her lips.

But suddenly, she felt beautiful.

i wasn't sure where this should go, but Maverick Wolf said in here, so here it is.  It might be classified as poetry, sorry if it is!

Nice write Caitlin.  I like it.  It's a light, simple piece.  Wonderful bit of prose to share with us all.  Great job, and if you do take over the forum...well, I look forward to some great reading.

Yesterday's history, tomorrow's a mystery, and today is a gift. That's why they call it the present.
