Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2017-06-23 08:59 PM

As her graceful
lay gathering dust
ignored in the corner,
she grew older without it.
New gray hairs
invaded her every wheres,
while wrinkles crinkled
the corner of her eyes
and furrowed her forehead.
Specks, spots and crepe
had overtaken her skin.
Her body plumped, frumped
and slumped in the usual places.
She left her alluring in the closet
selecting the  slimming instead.
High heels were history.
She didn’t do dyes, creams or serums,
or death defying exercises.
Her face she kept in a gold bag
of liners, blushes and shadows.
Social media mocked her by saying
this was the “new forty”.
She took a handful of pills
morning and night
for all that ailed her
and she assumed she’d
just drop dead someday.
The days she didn’t seem to hit
on all cylinders she felt senile.
On painful days she felt decrepit.
A good day left her feeling like fifty.
She didn’t have dreams of retirement
and traveling,
just the promise of working
as long as they’d let her,
then pitiful poor to the end.
Her bucket list had a hole in it.
Not that her life was bad,
She had love and progeny,
and a home that was paid for.
She had a village out her front door
wheat field and a river out the back.
She had a dog she cuddled
and cat she scratched
to grow older with her too.

THIS is absolutely one of, if not the, best poems you have ever written, and you have written some beauties, Lori. I love this poem.

Heh.Heh I didn't consider that you were whining. I thought it was merely a humorous poem of aging.

I'm getting better at hiding the whine behind the cheese, so to speak, lol. I'm glad you are so taken with this piece, I hope you are not the only one. ~L

I think that this "she" has the grace to look outside of herself and see the humor of taking in stride the aging symptoms - the ability to smile or laugh at herself, is her saving grace. I salute her.

Thanks for writing this kind of heroism, I will be there soon enough.

I totally agree with Jerry!! This is one of your very best writes, so much love and kindness, yet maintaining the loss of younger days so important to us as we age, when seeing the previous vigor and beauty of youth (all around us - but their days is coming - LOL).

Can't explain how much I enjoyed it.
