Hook & Eye Locks~

He's a ramshackle hook and eye kind of man,
never stays latched quite right,
doesn't want to be attached,
his doors never lock.

His little place cluttered with newspapers
and cockeyed stacks of books,
peeling wallpaper heavy with memory
cowers the corner,
frayed weeping curtains
trapped at breeze-less windows
void of birdsong.

Hook and eye locks hang haphazard
at both doors,
leaves blown in by the wind
decorate the old rag rug,
his cat content by the wood-stove
cleaning supper from her face.

He sits alone at the table
with his yellowing scrap-book of smiles,
moments of days when he had a love,
someone to cherish and protect
behind safe locks,
he loves camels and rye whiskey now.

Eyes are a black and white picture show
of a ramblin' man
who gave up the ghost,
sends out a mental invite
for the thief in the night
to come for his ramshackle life,
so tired..
he misses her,
he's ready to go.

Sky...You wrote a perfect picture of my grandfather after his wife passed away. This pretty much was his life till the thief in the night came for him, except he smoked cigars and drank beer.  Brought back fond memories of him that had long ago got lost in the catacombs of my mind...Paul

I so love the way you ascribe human characteristics to objects, Sky~.  You can bring a scene to life in a most literal sense, and there are very few who can pull that off.  All I want to do after reading this is sit down next to him and share that drink…and yup, I could see him here perfectly.

You've painted another scene that I can see clearly and taken my breath away because of it. I've said this I think. I'll tell you again. You belong in books.

A few more poets like you, Sky, could revive the old and glorious PIP.
