Fair to middlin' of nowhere

He slips on his jacket and favorite KU cap,
takes a hold of his red walker and heads out the door.
It is about 3:30 and he has a date to keep
with his beloved wife Wanda.
An aide pushes her wheelchair to the lobby window
and hands her a telephone.
Her beloved Bill is eagerly waiting to talk to her,
hoping she is not having a sleepy day.
The Covid-19 is keeping them apart.
They live on different floors at the Senior Manor,
He is living independently in an apartment
and she is on the nursing care wing.
He used to spend most of his days
in her room watching TV and holding her hand.
She doesn’t say much and sleeps a lot,
her stroke, broken hip, diabetes and dementia
have taken their toll.
When the virus hit, no visitors were allowed,
not even husbands and wives.
However they were allowed to facetime.
Something new to do for them both.
But it wasn’t nearly the same,
it didn’t come close.
She began to lose her appetite
and he began to worry.
But it was all they had.
On Easter I came to his lobby window
phone in hand for a chat.
I also went to to her room window
just to wave and smile and yell I love you.
I’m not sure she knew me.
Still, it was good to see them both.
He thought that it was a fine idea.
He would ask the aides to arrange it
so they could see each other
face to face at a window.
And so they did,
and now they do
at 3:30,
weather permitting.
She is eating better
and he is happy to be closer to her.
After being together over sixty years,
this separation is hard on them.
Hard as the glass window
that keeps them from touching,
and holding hands.

Yann,
I appreciate your empathy for the situation.
Covid-19 has touched us around the globe. And a cruel touch it has been too. ~L
