Fair to middlin' of nowhere

He was just a kid then.
too young to know
he  was poor,
growing up in the flats
by the Little Blue River
in Fairbury Nebraska.
He was a “river rat”.
He and his brother
spent their days
fishing and playing
in the Blue.
When he got bigger,
some of the older men
from town would take
a group of boys
‘coon hunting in the woods.
I suspect the boys
were a lot like him,
poor and too full of mischief.
They were good old guys,
setting good examples
and leaving lasting impressions.
Well, ‘coon hunting got in
that little boy’s blood
and may well have
saved the man’s life.
He is seventy now
and still takes a dog out
now and again,
for a dump or two.
Likes to show up
at  the hunts nearby
with a dog,
and meet all the guys.
His girl Easy,
is a Bench Show Champion.
The new dog, Floyd,
well, he still needs some work.
And the old “river rat”
fishes the Solomon in Kansas now,
but not near as often as he’d like.
All said and done,
I’d say that boy
from Fairbury flats
turned out just fine.
