Hotter Than Hell

We talked
about roads
of desert sand
where street graders
left curbs of piled sand
along both sides.

And never came back.

Summer monsoons
beat it down,
packed it
almost into rock,
prime for Jackrabbits
to leave their
pee and feces,
territorial markers,
rattlesnakes
to lie in the sun,
lizards
to suck up
the sub-noon heat.
And for unwary life
to die.

We talked about these things,
in the shade of mesquite,
chewing on its beans,
you, somewhere in my mind,
and I ,
somewhere in
Southern Arizona,
with the sun post-noon
and hotter than hell.

You cursed me
for bringing you out here.
vociferously slandered my name,
tore into my heritage,
and denigrated parts of me
you said you loved,
and passionately blamed me
for everything
that had gone wrong
between us.

Between Us.

Nothing is between us now
but hard-packed desert sand,
tenderly brushed to resemble
its surrounds,
not rained on yet,
a transplanted mesquite bush,
and a prickly pear cactus
obscuring all trace of you.

Except in my head.

And you’re laughing now,
because that damned viper
got me on the chin
when I was scraping things
together.

The irony of it.
I brought you out here
to leave you behind,

And even in that, I’ve failed.

the heart wants what the heart wants....nothing can change that and you didn't fail...you lived.
