there is no darkness
overbearing and shrouding my heart
I sit
looking out the window
at 8th Street
oh, there is darkness
inside The Hovel
but even it is broken up
by the lone candle which sits beside me
I am inside this Poeish setting
pondering how to do it
not if I will do it
but how
would love to have ink and quill
parchment paper
to transcribe my thoughts
but alas and drat
I have none
the keyboard will have to suffice
nothing is stirring
on the street
which is fine with me
it gives me a measure of aloneness
I need tonight
the only thing which give me pause
is sweet Zoe
lightly snoring on the sofa beside me
everything else here
in this cold, lifeless room
provides credibility to all that has been lost
the candle flickers
sending reflections into
my barren soul
barren because of the hurts I have caused
to those who didn’t deserve
my wives
all dead now
I hear people say
if I have my life to live over
I wouldn’t change one damn thing
I would
I’d change a lot of damn things
Eh . . .
the candle
is beginning to burn itself out
that is the reason I sit here tonight
staring out the window
I reach over
pat Zoe and wonder
whoever will take her
will she be loved as much as
I love that little mutt

Oh now Jerry,I do not know your health conditions but you are much too young to feel this is the end.Today I read of a 99 year old in town who is still out bowling. Many here are playing golf way past your age.My friend tells me her brother at 84 is off to the Dominican Republic again He goes every year, usually in the winter. But he is a off again to meet his friends. Hopefully your age is not the culprit here. That can be changed with a new mind set.But if you are indeed ill I have to say I am so sorry. Jo

I apologize to you, Jo, I am not ill and am actually in pretty darn good health considering the things I have wrong with me, but the "Wonder Drugs" I take have given me new life. You pretty much chastised me and I can't blame you, but I was on a morbid thought process and this came out.

Poe would be troubled by this. Jeez, Jerry, you have a way of describing darkness, that's for sure. A deep and powerful write.

Oh, Redstart I don't hold a candle to the Master of macabre, Poe.
