At night, alone—
unpinning my hair
gray locks

unwind
down my back

into pillow dreams
that tangle the years.

I awake
to the memory
of your fingers
un-knitting the knots
rampant around my face

at daybreak, alone—

my hands braid tight
these stranded locks
into a tight skein
skewered high
on my head

in the mirror

I see reflected
those old dreams
contained.

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.
~Mark Strand

Something about braids and the continuity it accrues through the years.
Reading this confirms my desire to never cut my own hair as I age, because I wouldn't be able to make braids anymore.
I really enjoyed and related to your lovely poem

emma, the fun thing about hair you can cut and it always keep growing.  After having my hair super short for 2 years now, I'm trying to grow it long...in summer, go figure!  My hair and I, have this relationship, an uneasy partnership, I usually win

A delicately-sad, warmly-nostalgic, absorbing poem.

This poem and your comment to Emma really struck a chord with me. I know exactly what you mean, my hair is "short" at the moment.

I'll be looking forward to reading more of you.
