Thibodaux, Louisiana
afternoon stroll with Zoe, my mutt
after about a block
guy on a bicycle pulled up alongside
the sidewalk where we were walking
spoke to me
I stopped, said hello
started to leave
he said
gimmie five dollars
not could you spare a little
for me
no, he said, gimmie five dollars
I told him I didn’t have five dollars for him
he said
I could rob you, I could rob you right here
told him that he probably could
as I backed up two steps
gripped the hickory walking cane
I use when walking
so hard my hand was hurting
he made like he was going to get off his bike
to rob me
all I could do was wait
he kept looking at me
and the cane
finally got back on his bike
rode away
he could have actually robbed me
if he had tried
I’m old, got emphysema
and other assorted things wrong with me
but if I’d been lucky
I would have taken out as few of those
pearly whites of his
while he was doing his thing
I see him every so often
he won’t meet my eyes when he rides by

Oh, I do Jo, I sure do. Plus I've a sharp lock-blade knife in my pocket. I may go down, but the blood won't be all mine.

those sure are some nasty streets of life, stay safe, other than that, don't know what to say, good poem, seems trivial to say

Thank you Emma, that's really about all you can say.

What a testimony to the type of cold and creepy people that prey on the elderly. And what a wonderful example of standing your ground and not being intimidated and turning the punk away. Way to go my friend.
The mean streets taught you well and continue to serve you.  Apparently it wasn't all wasted...

nice writing...I feel like many times God and his angels have protected me...perhaps making me look bigger or meaner than I am...James

Then again, James, you may be meaner that even you think you are.
