my constant companion my shadow warned me of the nighttime wind I heeded his warning for the wind shrieked hard and loud enough I sat straight up in bed then lay there sweating in the dark of night The Hovel was taking a beating the dread in my heart caused the screeching wind to make me think of fire swung my legs around; stood peered out my window my shadow and I at the mean streets of Thibodaux still half asleep streetlights illuminated unsecured things tumbling along with the wind but no fire then . . . the wind stopped and an eerie quiet to an ordinary March night returned my shadow smiled I trudged back to bed he tucked me in
