Something to Latch Onto

Something to latch onto, to throw it in my face.
That is what you wait for, in all dignified grace.
You can’t stand that I’m happy; you wish to see a fall.
And so you sit there silent, so far above us all.

And you think that you know this—have seen it all before.
With your prejudiced judgments, and quiet call to war.
Never once stopping to look, and see we aren’t the same
As you give your indictment—assert to us our shame.

Such actions solidify what I have always known.
The man who can’t share laughter, will mostly stand alone.
And yet now that he doesn’t, you turn your selfish stare
Call his very love blasphemous, and question why he’d dare!

But here I stand, not goaded, knowing what that would find;
The gun already loaded in self-sanctified mind.
So you just keep there waiting, I’ve got better things to do.
Then sit here with you, debating—I’ve something to latch onto.

I'm a bit confused - is it a woman's voice talking here, waiting "in dignified grace" but has something to latch onto. But then she says "you just keep there waiting" - telling this to a man? So they're both waiting..for what?
but I like the phrase "the man who can't share laughter mostly stand alone". This the woman is saying to the man she's talking to..

Hope I'm not far off here, but I like to internalize a poem so this is why I'm nitpicking.

Jer, uh huh

Yann, I am glad you enjoyed, thank you.

jjote,
I usually like to leave a poem's interpretation up to the reader, but since you are self-conscious enough to ask for clarification without offering presumption, I will try to elaborate a little bit here.  The poem is written from one man to another man whom he had believed to be his friend, for they had known each quite some time and often offered advice or blessings toward one another, as they both had undergone some struggles in their lives by which they related to each other well.

This man, whom he believed was his friend, had often told him not to be so down on himself and to look to the future and that he could find love there again, and one day he did.  His no-longer-friend turned his back on him then, though, never giving a reason why, but simply watching his every move until he would burst out upon him and his new love trying to goad him into a fight, or twist his own words against him to condemn the lovers, proclaiming their love a sham.  Never once justifying these actions with any sound reason.

In not understanding his no-longer-friend's stalking nature and the way he kept latching on to his own words to use against him, this poem was was this man's declaration to him to just keep waiting in the shadows while he himself would not argue with him anymore, but instead "latch onto" something far more healthy for him... his love.

I hope that helps a little bit.

"The man who can’t share laughter, will mostly stand alone."

Oh, Michael if this is you own wording it really should hold a copy write. I love it.

As much as I love a man who can shed tears.

Tanya, the old me would have said, "will always stand alone," instead of "mostly."  you affect change in me, and that for the positive.  Thank you, love.

latearrival, I thank you for your kind words.  maybe one day.

James, indeed, it is.  Thank you for reading.
