in the shadows

Sleep eludes me, hiding in mists, within dark abyss,
in shadow splintered clouds of faces, places, memories
chaotic swirling water's edge of dreams,
tendrils of dragon's breath beckon me
to sleep that I may see
disjointed thoughts caught in knotted skeins of time
taunting me with flashing half imagined
half remembered scenes of you.

Six times this night I lay my body down to sleep
to loose entangled threads of harsh reality,
to be set free to drift to swim in supple seas that beckon me,
dreams’ translucent lotus petals sailing free on gentle waves,
on currents soft with scented possibilities,
warming visions just beyond the reach of clarity,
I sense the cleansing purity of you.

Six times as I begin to slip away into
safe sheltered harbor of your soul,
to seek warm welcomed grasp
of love's swift undertow,
my body and my brain are jolted
out of sleep, out of timeless reverie
and I am tossed back, unwanted driftwood
left disheveled and abandoned on the beachhead of my life.

I am this night in search of peace
yet each attempt meets cold futility;
some years on rare occasions,
in late September when moon and tides are right,
on beaches not so far from where I live today
I've learned I can smell Africa
lightly on the breeze as taste that lingers
in the mind without my body being there.

My brain then adds hours to a clock
that tells me when you’re sleeping,
if only I can reach a place within
the soft parade of dreams you may be keeping,
I might join you in brief endless woven moments
of hopeful shared awareness and delight,
but not this night, this night you are taste
that lingers in the mind when I am hungry.

Wonderful thoughts expressed the "icebox" way makes this tale of sleeplessness and wanting one I completely relate to, as I guess a few others will also. The sadness that can happen to a love which was once strong and heartfelt is difficult, very difficult to overcome. Yes, I have spent many sleepless nights with someone dear to me on my thoughts.

I think Jer has it pegged.  many of us will relate to suffering through a sleepless night with but one thing on the mind...  the one person who could possibly soothe the tension.  I've had more than my share I know.

enjoyed the tasting from your feral pen mister...

*lightin' a candle for ya, this just penetrates and resonates with strong flavor much longer than the read, relating here!

Charly as sad as this is, it is also one of the sweetest love scenes I have ever read. May more bitter sweet dreams come to you, because as sorry and sad they may be, they gave you cause to remember. JO

Aren't we all just blessed by your sleeplessness, dear Charly!! This is totally awesome, one to keep and savor more than once. I am so glad you shared it, a true gift.

This was by far one of the most beautiful and amazing pieces of writing I've ever read. Your imagery in this is exquisite. I felt as if I was the one having the sleepless night thinking of the one who has my heart. Just poetic genius in my opinion. Excellent!

True love always waits.
