Where do I begin
to tell you about
grumpy old men?
With what makes them
grumble or pout?
Or Heaven help me,
with what makes them shout?
It is really quite easy-
Simply disagree…
(with their Politics especially)
Or try something new
with their favorite recipe.
And whatever you do
don’t move too slow
and make them miss
their favorite T. V. show.
And I would be remiss
if I forgot that serving cold coffee
is sure to drive them crazy.
Although, I have a hunch
they’re not all a bad bunch.
They’ve just gotten set in their ways
in their golden days.
It is hard for them to adapt to change.
They don’t like to rearrange
the things they take for granted.
They like their feet where they’re planted.
I know it seems like it’s the little stuff
that gets them all in a huff.
Modern times move too fast.
Things are no longer built to last.
I guess it isn’t too much to ask
of a simple mundane task
or in something long familiar
that they choose to care.
It is their fast and sound routine,
in a world where words don’t always
say what they mean,
that makes them feel secure.
Little preferences that endure
and say, “These are my ways.
I may be old, grumpy and gray,
but I am very far from faded away.”

Great write! You were right on about everything you wrote about. I admit it, here and now, for everyone to see . . . I, too, am a grumpy old man . . .

J.J.thomas,
Thank you for commenting! I'm so glad you liked it too. My Dad (among others) was inspirational in this piece. ~L
