SIMBA MHERE, WE SALUTE YOU
8 February 2015

I didn’t know you,
but I do now
in sadness
and tears.

I wish you didn’t have
to have died
for that.

I saw, painted on screen,
your warm, bright smile
that, like thousands of others,
I will never forget;
and vibrant proof
of your fiery passion for life
and how you laid youself down
for any who needed you;
and your irrepressible sense
of fun and mischief;
and how you were everybody’s answer
to all their problems.

And I saw how
those who knew you best
were rocked
into shiver-shock.
Their stories dissolved us all.

You won’t be resting in peace.
You will be
inspiring the angels
and making them laugh,
you hero of thousands,
for the very best
reasons.

You are a beacon for us all
on the pathway you chose.
May we honour you
by following it.

Your strong family’s agony,
I know, is tempered
by their pride
in the legacy
you have left
us
all.

Owl

Simbarashe Mhere was buried in the Hero’s Acre of West Park Cemetry in Roosevelt Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 7 February.  He was born in Zimbabwe on 29 October 1988 and came to South Africa with his parents when he was 23 months old.  He was 27 when he and his girl friend were killed on 31 January 2015 when a drunk driver drove into their car.  Simba’s father was in the car and survived.  Simba was one of several presenters of Top Billing, an elitist TV program that didn’t appeal to me at all and I hardly ever watched, but when I did, I found him a breath of fresh forest air.  He was an incredible person as I have learned from the hearts and souls of the huge number of people who have been devastated by the loss.  The outpourings and the wonderful tales and memories, many told and many substantiated by multiple TV clips, have taught me who he was, is and ever will be.
