The sky was a splash of orange
and the shadows long-legged
and bordered with quivering gold,
and a silence surged over her
as she felt the centuries unravel
down her spine.

Eggshell memories of nameless ancestors
crept into her unhurried mind
and she met herself in them,
brushed into flickering silhouettes,
fire-dancing in the dying gasps
of the waning day.

The sun’s final glance
released her into loss,
and she turned
and faded into the grieving night,
a world away, at fingertip-touch.

Lovely thoughts.Memories are sometimes strange and mixed with stories long ago told.I have been bless by this crazy internet and have found many  relatives on the white pages of Facebook.I have been gifted photos from long before my time on earth and have had the beautiful gift of meeting the 62 year old daughter of my mother's cousin.I had met her family long before she was born.In fact at age fifteen I had a wicked school girl crush on her father. She is traveling  in a nice van with her dog and stopped by on two occasions and I was able to hand her photos of some she had never heard of.Then my son and I picked her up at the last stop which was close to us and had a nice breakfast together in a  restaurant facing the ocean. She is still on the road making stops along the way. What a great was given to me. Enjoying life any way it is handed to me. Love to you Diana, Jo

Thank you, Martyjo, for your kind words about my poem and your delightful recent memories swirled into distant ones.  I love the fact that the daughter of your mother's cousin is travelling with her dog.

You speak of the "grieving night" in this peace, yet I draw out a much deeper sense of peace and acceptance for the individual passing through it, as if the grieving itself is behind her.

You are extremely perceptive Michael, and you are so right about the first half in that she/I was wrapped in peace and acceptance of all before/around/in her/me.

However the grieving is being done by the (literal) night because the (literal) sun has gone, and is a world away, although it just a finger touch away at the moment of transition from day to night.  And just as much as she/I was part of the setting sun and the centuries behind her/me and the ancestors, is/am she/I part of the night, and so she/I is/am part of the grieving by the night of the sun's setting.  In other words, she/I is/am part of the wilds of nature.

Parts of the puzzle. They all bring something to the table don't they. Like Jo, the internet has led me to many discoveries. Love this, Diana.
