It’s funny how when you’re alone-
Your mind goes drifting back…
To times when you were younger-
Your hair was thick and black.

Your body, lean as rawhide,
You were a riding fool.
But that was before the lessons,
You’ve learned in life’s hard school.

You think about the dances-
That followed rodeos-
About the pretty groupies,
That hung around the shows.

About that girl in Santa Fe-
Who promised she’d be mine…
But she isn’t worth the whiskey-
That would take her off my mind.

I thought she really loved me-
Was sure that we’d be wed.
But the way that she kept flirting,
Took those thoughts out of my head.

But miles and years cannot erase-
Her, from this heart of mine.
And she isn’t worth the whiskey-
To get her off my mind.
