Insomnia
(from The Dark Side)

Thunder boomed!
Rumbled on and on
seemingly forever . . .

Not really -
but it might as well have –
I couldn't sleep either way.

Every time I closed my eyes
I swear the bed moved
just like someone
was climbing onto it,
and the low hiss
of breath,
coming and going
was unnerving.

And every time,
I froze – unable to move,
to suck in my breathe,
to roll onto the floor,
unable even to pray
there was nothing there.

Finally I forced myself to turn over,
hoping I was doing it
in a way
that mimicked doing it
in my sleep,
barely seeing
through squinting eyes -

And nothing . . .
was there

When my heart slowed
I again closed my eyes
started to drift . . .

and the bed moved . . .

again,

and morning came,
body lethargic,
eyes swollen from the lack of . . .

I lay on my back
struggling to pull myself
from the bed . . .

the alarm goes off - SCREEEEEEEE!
I see a shadow move
from the corner of my eye,
the bed moves ,

I scream, leap from the bed,
knock the coffee
out of my wife's hand . . .

What the hell is wrong with you!! she yells,
then laughs at the expression
on my face . . .

just as – the bed moves
and we hear the soft hiss
of breath

sucking in and out,

in and out
. . .

Get a new bed bed.

A little humor with a little horror goes a long way!
Great write Mr. Maybe not having a loaded pizza before you go to bed could help...
LOL...

Very well rendered insomnia, dear Jimmy.

There are so many mysterious sounds in the dark of the night ...

My bed doesn't move but I'm well acquainted with insomnia. Nothing spooky about it, just arthritis and fibromyalgia.
